Courtland, originally named Jerusalem, has a rich history. Established in 1791, the town grew slowly because of difficult transportation. The town’s most historic event occurred at the courthouse, where in 1831, Nat Turner was tried and hanged for the slave uprising in Southampton County. In 1888 the Atlantic and Danville Railroad was built through town which resulted in the fastest spurt of growth in town history. Many of the homes built during that era still stand today. In recent years, with sewer and water in place, new subdivisions have offered additional residential opportunities. Two new museums and an updated library have provided cultural activities here-to for not available.
