Courtland is the county seat for Southampton County. With that in mind, the Southampton County Sheriff’s office is located there. The Deputies routinely travel town streets. Courtland also has a full time town sergeant who prides himself in knowing most of the town residents.

Courtland has their own rescue squad who recently (2000) built a new structure to house their ambulances and equipment. The Courtland Fire Department has ___ fire trucks. Although volunteers, the Fire Department has state certified fire fighters.
